Fall Retreat 2013

My annual fall quilt retreat was held at The Abbey Resort at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. As always, the weekend zooms by too quickly, but it’s spent well, sewing, reconnecting with friends, meeting new ones, sharing projects and relaxing. And as a bonus, the fall colors were gorgeous!

As always, the quilts were the stars of the show!

Our end of the retreat Show and Tell will be featured in my next few posts, and today just a quick overview. Most of us worked on holiday quilt projects and gifts in the sewing room. This year’s most popular fabric was hands down, the Elf on the Shelf, in both quilts and pillowcases.

(Stay tuned, I’ll be posting a pillowcase tutorial later this month with a giveaway!)

Another popular item was the mini table runner a bunch of us purchased at The Stitchery. These fun runners are great hostess gifts and take less than twenty minutes to complete.

Joanne’s Microwave Bowl Pot Holder was the most talked about project of the weekend. Luckily, there’s still time for our group – and you, too – to complete this one in time for the holidays! It’s a perfect hostess gift.

After all the sewing hours, we definitely needed a snack. Vikky was nice enough to share her recipe for Pennsylvania Dunkers – YUM!

Pennsylvania Dunkers
1/2 lb. softened butter
2 cups white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup finely chopped pecans (can use more)

Mix together butter, sugars, egg, vanilla in large bowl.
Mix very well. In separate bowl, mix together dry ingredients.
Slowly add dry ingredients to sugar mixture. Mix VERY WELL with hands.
Separate dough into four parts.
Shape and pat each part into logs approximately 6″ long, 2 1/2″ wide, and 1″
Wrap each log tightly in wax paper and freeze.
To bake, slice thin, @1/6 inch, with sharp knife. Bake at 350 for 7-8 minutes
until just slightly browned on edges.
Watch closely, they can get over baked easily.
Allow to cool a few minutes before removing from the pan. Each log makes about
25 to 30 cookies

Everyone really enjoyed their weekend of sewing and shopping so much that we’ve had a request to add an extra day next year! Get ready to begin our 2014 Fall retreat on Thursday November 6th.

Special thanks to Therese, our vendor from That Quilt Shop in Woodstock, Carrie and Nancy from The Stitchery in Delavan, Lynn Ray, Schoolhouse Quilts, and Darlene Votzmeyer, Sew Busy Quilting, darvotz@sbcglobal.net, for helping us make our weekend the best reatreat so far. A BIG thank you to the staff at The Abbey for their hard work in delivering our supplies and making our stay comfortable.
